What Is the Digital SAT?
The Digital SAT is the current format of the College Board's SAT, fully established as of March 2024. It replaced the traditional paper-based test with a shorter, adaptive, computer-based exam administered through the Bluebook testing app. The Digital SAT consists of two sections: Reading & Writing (54 questions in 64 minutes) and Math (44 questions in 70 minutes), for a total of 98 questions in 2 hours and 14 minutes.
The test uses Multistage Adaptive Testing (MST), meaning each section is divided into two modules. Module 1 is the same difficulty for all students, while Module 2 adjusts in difficulty based on your performance in Module 1. This adaptive design allows for a shorter test while maintaining scoring precision. The Math section includes a built-in Desmos graphing calculator available for all questions.
The Digital SAT features shorter passages (25–150 words) with single questions in the Reading & Writing section, has no essay or experimental section, and imposes no penalty for wrong answers. Scores are typically released in approximately two weeks. With many universities reinstating test requirements, SAT preparation is more relevant than ever for college-bound students.

- Many universities reinstating test requirements — SAT prep is more relevant than ever

SAT Prep Strategies
Specific strategies that make the biggest difference on the Digital SAT.
Reading & Writing Strategies
- Master the short-passage format — each question has its own 25–150 word passage
- Focus on evidence-based reasoning — the SAT rewards finding proof in the text, not guessing
- Learn grammar rules tested most frequently: subject-verb agreement, punctuation, transitions
- Practice identifying rhetorical choices — purpose, tone, and structure questions are high-frequency
- Use process of elimination aggressively — no penalty for wrong answers means always guess
Math Strategies
- Learn the Desmos graphing calculator — it's built into Bluebook and can solve many problems visually
- Master algebra fundamentals — Heart of Algebra questions make up the largest portion
- Practice with the adaptive format — Module 2 difficulty depends on Module 1 performance
- Memorize the 12 geometry formulas provided on the reference sheet and know when to apply each
- Focus on word problems and data interpretation — these combine math skills with reading comprehension

Frequently Asked
Questions.
Most students need 2–4 months of consistent preparation. Students starting at 1000–1100 aiming for 1300+ should plan 3–4 months. Students starting at 1200+ aiming for 1400+ may need 2–3 months of focused work. The College Board reports that 20+ hours of Khan Academy practice correlates with a 115-point average score increase.
A 'good' score depends on your college targets. The national average is around 1060. A 1200+ puts you above the 75th percentile. A 1400+ puts you in the top 5%. For Ivy League and top-20 schools, aim for 1500+. Use our college score table above to find the middle-50% range for your target schools.
The Digital SAT (launched March 2024) is shorter (2h14m vs 3h), adaptive (Module 2 difficulty adjusts based on Module 1), uses shorter passages, includes a built-in Desmos graphing calculator, and has no essay section. Scores release faster (~2 weeks).
The Digital SAT uses Multistage Adaptive Testing (MST). Each section has 2 modules. Module 1 is the same for all students. If you perform well on Module 1, you're routed to a harder Module 2 (which allows scores up to 800). If you struggle on Module 1, you get an easier Module 2 (capping your score around 560-600 per section).
Both tests are accepted by all US colleges. The SAT is adaptive and digital-only, while the Enhanced ACT offers paper or digital options. Students who excel at reading and evidence-based reasoning often prefer the SAT. Students who are faster workers and stronger in science may prefer the ACT. We recommend taking a practice test of each to compare.
Yes — the entire Math section allows calculator use. The Desmos graphing calculator is built into the Bluebook testing app, and you can also bring your own approved calculator. Learning to use Desmos effectively is a significant strategic advantage.
Most students take the SAT 2–3 times. Many colleges superscore (take your highest section scores across all test dates), so retaking can only help. Diminishing returns typically set in after 3 attempts. Focus on targeted preparation between each sitting rather than simply retaking without improvement.
Ideally, begin structured prep 3–4 months before your target test date. Most students take the SAT first in the spring of junior year (March or May) and again in the fall of senior year (August–October) if needed. Summer before senior year is a popular intensive prep period.
College Board provides 7 full-length adaptive practice tests in the Bluebook app (Tests 4–10), 3 paper-format PDFs (Tests 1–3), a Student Question Bank with hundreds of questions, Question of the Day, and a Build Your Study Plan tool. Khan Academy offers free personalized SAT prep as an official College Board partner.
SAT tutoring typically ranges from $40–$100+ per hour depending on tutor qualifications and experience. Group courses from major companies like Princeton Review and Kaplan range from $650–$1,800. At ComboTutors, we provide personalized 1-on-1 tutoring at competitive rates — contact us for a free consultation and quote.
Yes — the test-optional trend is reversing. MIT, Georgetown, Dartmouth, Brown, Yale, and many others have reinstated test requirements. Even at test-optional schools, submitting a strong score significantly strengthens your application. The College Board reports that 80%+ of applicants still submit scores.
The SAT scores range from 400–1600 total. You receive two section scores: Reading & Writing (200–800) and Math (200–800). There are no penalties for wrong answers. Your score is determined by the number of correct answers and the difficulty level of your Module 2 (adaptive routing).
