Question 1

What is the IB Diploma Programme?

Accepted Answer

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme is a rigorous two-year pre-university curriculum for students aged 16-19. Students study six subjects across different groups (three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level), plus three core components: Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay (EE), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). The programme is recognized by universities worldwide and is known for developing critical thinking, research skills, and international-mindedness.

Question 2

How does IB Diploma scoring work?

Accepted Answer

Each of the six IB subjects is graded on a scale of 1 to 7, giving a maximum of 42 points from subjects alone. An additional 3 bonus points can be earned through the combination of TOK and the Extended Essay, bringing the maximum possible score to 45. To earn the Diploma, students must achieve at least 24 points overall, meet minimum subject-level requirements, and complete all CAS requirements. A score of 38+ is generally considered excellent and competitive for top universities.

Question 3

Is the IB Diploma harder than AP?

Accepted Answer

The IB Diploma and AP programmes are different in structure rather than simply one being 'harder.' The IB requires breadth (six subjects plus core components), meaning students cannot focus exclusively on their strongest areas. AP allows students to choose individual courses and go deep in specific subjects. Many students find the IB more demanding overall because of the simultaneous workload across six subjects, the Extended Essay, TOK essay, and CAS requirements. However, individual AP courses at the highest level can be equally or more challenging in their specific subject area.

Question 4

How do I get a 7 in an IB subject?

Accepted Answer

Earning a 7 requires consistent effort across both internal assessments and external exams. Start by understanding the assessment criteria and mark schemes thoroughly — the IB publishes detailed descriptors for each grade boundary. Focus on your Internal Assessments early, as these contribute significantly to your final grade (typically 20-30%). For exam preparation, practice with past papers under timed conditions and review examiner reports to understand common mistakes. Working with a tutor who has IB examining experience can provide targeted feedback on where you are losing marks.

Question 5

What are the IB digital exams in 2026?

Accepted Answer

The IB is launching its first digital exams in May 2026 with approximately 60 pioneer schools and around 3,000 students. The initial digital subjects are English Language & Literature, Spanish Language & Literature, and English B (SL). By November 2026, all IB World Schools will have the option to participate. The digital format will use a secure testing platform, and the IB plans a full transition to digital exams by the early 2030s. Students at non-pioneer schools will continue with paper-based exams for the May 2026 session.

Question 6

How much does IB tutoring cost?

Accepted Answer

IB tutoring rates vary depending on the subject, tutor qualifications, and level of support needed. Specialist IB tutors typically charge between $50 and $120 per hour, with experienced IB examiners often at the higher end. Group tutoring and package deals can reduce per-session costs. At Combo Tutors, we offer competitive rates for personalized 1-on-1 IB tutoring across all subject groups — contact us for a free consultation and tailored quote based on your specific needs.

Question 7

How do I choose an Extended Essay topic?

Accepted Answer

Choose a subject you are genuinely passionate about, as you will be spending months on this research paper. The best EE topics are specific enough to be thoroughly explored in 4,000 words but broad enough to find sufficient sources. Avoid topics that are too ambitious or require specialized equipment or access you do not have. Discuss potential research questions with your supervisor early, review exemplar essays on platforms like Clastify to see what top-scoring work looks like, and ensure your question allows for analysis and argument rather than simple description.

Question 8

What are some tips for the TOK essay?

Accepted Answer

The most effective TOK essays take a clear position on the prescribed title and sustain a well-structured argument throughout. Use specific, well-developed real-life examples from at least two areas of knowledge — vague or generic examples weaken your essay significantly. Engage with counterclaims and multiple perspectives rather than presenting a one-sided argument. Keep your essay within the 1,600-word limit, as examiners will stop reading beyond this point. Review the assessment criteria carefully and look at the May 2026 prescribed titles analysis on IBMastery for examiner-focused insights.

Question 9

Can I fail the IB Diploma and still graduate from high school?

Accepted Answer

Yes — failing the IB Diploma does not necessarily prevent you from graduating high school, as this depends on your school's policies and local education requirements. If you do not meet the IB Diploma requirements (minimum 24 points, no failing conditions), you may receive IB Course Results instead, which certify your grades in individual subjects. Many universities will still consider IB Course Results for admissions, though some scholarship and advanced standing opportunities may require the full Diploma. Speak with your school counselor about local graduation requirements separate from the IB.

Question 10

How does the IB Diploma help with US college admissions?

Accepted Answer

US colleges and universities widely recognize and respect the IB Diploma. Admissions officers view the IB as one of the most rigorous secondary curricula available, and strong IB scores (especially at Higher Level) can earn college credit and advanced placement at many institutions. The IB's emphasis on research (EE), critical thinking (TOK), and community engagement (CAS) aligns well with what selective universities look for in applicants. Many universities publish specific IB credit policies — for example, a score of 5 or higher on HL exams commonly qualifies for credit. The holistic nature of the IB Diploma can also strengthen your application narrative.
