Two routes at once

Combo Tutors provides online and private tutors for London families from our registered office in Spitalfields, E1 5NF. London has two very different selective routes: state grammar schools in seven outer boroughs, each area with its own 11+ arrangements, and independent schools such as Westminster, St Paul's and Dulwich College that set their own entrance assessments at 11+ or 13+. We match your child to a tutor for the exact route, test and exam board they face, then plan lessons back from the test or exam date.
Exams and routes
Ask your child's school or the target school which route applies. Formats and dates differ by school and by borough.
| Route | What it involves | Key dates |
|---|---|---|
| State grammar 11+ | London's state grammar schools are in seven boroughs: Barnet, Bexley, Bromley, Enfield, Kingston upon Thames, Redbridge and Sutton. Each borough or school sets its own test and registration window. | Tests in Year 6, usually in September |
| Independent 11+ and 13+ | Independent schools such as Westminster, St Paul's, City of London School, North London Collegiate and Dulwich College run their own entrance assessments. Some admit at 11+, some at 13+, and some at both. | Set by each school; check its admissions page |
| GCSE and IGCSE | Most London schools enter AQA, Edexcel or OCR GCSEs; many independent schools use Edexcel or Cambridge IGCSE for some subjects. | Summer exams in Year 11 |
| A-Level and IB Diploma | A-Levels are the main sixth-form route. Southbank International School and the International School of London teach the IB. | Summer exams in Year 13 |
Where students need help
The pressure points we see most often from London families.
Families often prepare for a grammar test and independent school entrance in the same year, with different formats.
Some schools admit at 13+, so preparation runs alongside Year 7 and 8 schoolwork.
IGCSE and GCSE papers in the same subject differ in structure, so practice must match the board.
Students moving between A-Level and IB need help with the change in workload and assessment style.

IB Mathematics · London
My daughter was struggling with IB Mathematics HL and had almost given up hope of getting a 7. After just two months of weekly sessions with her Combo Tutors tutor, her confidence soared and she went from a predicted 4 to a final grade of 6. The personalised approach made all the difference—her tutor identified exactly where the gaps were and worked through them systematically.

A-Level Physics · Manchester
My son started tutoring for A-Level Physics about three months before his exams. His tutor was incredibly patient and broke down complex topics like electromagnetic induction into simple, intuitive steps. He ended up getting an A* which we genuinely didn't think was possible. I'd recommend Combo Tutors to any parent who wants a tutor that actually cares about your child's progress.

GCSE Science · Birmingham
We needed help with GCSE Science for my son who found chemistry particularly challenging. His tutor made the sessions engaging and relatable—using real-world examples that finally made reactions and bonding click for him. He improved by two grades and, more importantly, actually enjoys science now.
